Frequently asked questions
Everything about converting video to GIF with gif.ninja — the short version: it's free, and your video never leaves your browser.
Is gif.ninja free?
Yes, completely free. Ads on the site keep it running, so you never hit a paywall, a sign-up wall, or a watermark.
Do you upload or store my videos?
No. Conversion happens entirely in your browser using WebAssembly — your video never leaves your device and never touches our servers. There is nothing for us to store, see, or leak.
Which video formats can I convert?
Most common formats, including MP4, MOV, AVI, WebM, and MKV — anything ffmpeg can read.
How long a clip can I convert?
In your browser, up to 30 seconds — that keeps conversion fast and memory-safe. The source video has no upload limit, but very large or long source files are slower to load. Longer GIFs will be supported via the server soon.
Why is my GIF 320px wide?
GIF file sizes grow very fast with dimensions and frame rate. 320px at 20fps is the sweet spot between looking crisp and staying small enough to share anywhere.
Is there a watermark?
Never. Your GIF is clean.
Why does it look better than other converters?
We build a custom color palette from your exact clip and apply it with high-quality Lanczos scaling — a two-pass process that avoids the muddy, banded look of single-pass converters.
Does it work offline?
Once the page and the converter engine have loaded, yes — the conversion itself needs no connection.
Can I convert a YouTube link?
Not yet — download the video first, then convert the file here.
